On the eve of a new year

It 's a few hours before the clock lands on a new year.
As with every period, one tends to reflect and ponder.
The page that I am about to turn is in fact a good number of pages, journal pages, annotations, quotes that helped me get by, chronicles of my travels, drawings and papers I pasted on my notebook, and also, silence.
Returning to the place where I grew up has made this year quite unique. I lived overseas for five years.
For all my life until now I used to feel awkward for not having had a straight forward path like most people seem to have. But as I look back I feel devoid of any such concerns and instead, embrace life exactly as it has been, as it is. It's the twists and turns and times of absolute doubt that brought meaning; moments I would not have lived had I chosen a predictable path.
I wouldn't change the struggle and the joy, and by the time the clock reaches midnight and the beginning of two-thousand-sixteen I will not wish for anything other than for life to keep constructing and deconstructing me.

Georgia O'Keeffe is one of my favourite painters of all times.

The spirit of Flamenco

Carmen. Teatro De Gollado. Guadalajara, México

Yesterday I found these photographs from one of my last performances: Carmen.
I scanned the pictures which seemed so remote and so precious. It was almost as if I didn't recognise myself in them. And as poor as their quality is, they remind me of a time when I devoted myself to flamenco.

Interestingly, Carmen was Bizet's final opera. It was presented to the public in 1875 and he passed away three months later and unaware of the enduring success it would have. He thought it a failure.

There's a Finish proverb...

...I much like given my visual nature, and it goes somewhere along these lines: "You can't see the trees because you are in the forest."
After living overseas for a few years I returned to México, my country of origin and a place which holds unseen treasures -and this is my gain-.

Upon returning, I have met a few dedicated and remarkably capable people whom I like to think of as those trees we often go past by. They reinforced my appreciation for local talent and challenged the so-called life quality with its luxury products for it is not in possessing expensive things that we become rich.

But in the act of shaping our personality through the things we mindfully choose -whether expensive or not- It is commonplace to see women wearing handbags and other accessories like trophies, proud of their inherent status which is ok I suppose. It simply makes me think of how many women think better of themselves by camouflaging with the rest who have made the same choice. Isn't fashion our second skin? The way we go out and about to face the world? Why try to look the same?...
Coco Chanel said: "Dress vulgarly and they'll remember the dress. Dress with elegance and they'll remember the woman." And I'd like to add (dear Coco): They'll remember both as aesthetic accomplices.

Today, I write these lines to acknowledge the Mexican artists and designers I have fortunately met. Among them: Fashion Designer Abel López whose work rings true to me visually, hence, spiritually.

I want to question our notion of status and support local, tailor-made fashion and other disciplines.
I would like to think that things owe us more than we want to believe and that there is unparalleled beauty in being the best version of ourselves!

 ※

On the advent of this year's birthday I have discovered the beauty of floral architecture and floral desing by the likes of Dan Takeda and Sean Cook. Here a couple of arrangements inspired by them.

Lines flowing

The first illustration took place at a friend's studio. Inspired by the surrounding and by the endearing way in which she has always called me; Pauli.

Pages of life

These are a few selected pages of another journal I've finished. Though I mostly write or scribble, there are times when I rather draw or paste something. The last page has a sticker I found in the street in Germany. I knew back then where I wanted to place it.

This is the end of another beginning. Now I just need to get another journal

Audiovisual

It's been quite a few years since I took these photographs for an audiovisual project.
I had danced at Teatro DeGollado (DeGollado's theatre, Guadalajara, México) beforehand. One performing night, I sneaked into the attic upon realisation of a tiny and unlit staircase.
It was a wonderful sight. There were windows from ceiling to floor all around, overlooking the city centre in a 360 degree angle. Weeks after my finding I had to deliver a university audiovisual project addressing a social issue. I chose to depict depression. Gathering some chutzpah!, I appeared at the theatre with my analog camera and a friend I had chosen for the project.
I managed to get access after explaining that I had performed there the previous couple of weeks. "No it won't take long" I recall answering. It took ages!. No tripod, no filters, -I used a translucent paper to make up for the lack of equipment- everything was kind of basic but the experience turned out to be rather satisfactory.

Epistle

This is an illustration I made after receiving some stickers and labels from a friend in Germany.
Paper letters have become scarce. A pity, because there is such happiness in welcoming the paper- traveller.
